"In 18th-century Europe, several factories opened for the production of decorative objects of remarkably high quality, from porcelain to textiles and the cutting of semiprecious stones. A taste for these objets d'art grew also as a result of archaeological discoveries. ... The manufacture of objects using traditional artisanal methods, with great importance given to craftsmanship, was directly supervised by the royal courts."
