The most influential French artists of the 17th century chose as much as they could to avoid the elaborate social hierarchies and political instability of their native country. The needs of leading painters like Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) were better met in the open air of Rome. These vigorous outdoor compositions by the two friends are preserved today at the Morgan Library in New York.
