Heaven & Earth

Allegorical Scene in Clouds
1761

Allegorical Scene in Clouds
1761

A small collection of wash drawings by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770)  clan patriarch, style innovator, and present-day darling of art historians. This first segment – with scenes set in the sky among clouds  can be traced to finished motifs and  figures in the artist's innumerable surviving ceiling frescoes located all over Europe. The latter group  with figures bound to earth by ordinary mortal gravity  similarly invite comparison to mythical and occult imagery from the artist's many etchings (appearing here tomorrow).
