After gazing at that amazing French settee yesterday (the one upholstered in red) I became preoccupied with what must have been a once-universal European passion for giltwood furniture and fittings. This craft  based on insanely refined woodcarving embellished with gold leaf  endured over the course of several centuries, leaving behind thousands upon thousands of fashionable artifacts. They remain confident to this day of an always-warm welcome at the auction houses, where most of these pictures were produced.
