Mosaic Letter E

Enameled mosaic tiles applied to a steel girder holding up the freeway on a San Francisco traffic island where few pedestrians venture. This blockish, pieced-together letter E could never (it seems to me) have been conceived in its unlikely shape or with its lively faceted surface in a different space than the one it inhabits. And to the degree that it is place-specific, it seems inevitable – which probably explains why it has suffered no defacement, yet.
