Toward the end of Sunday afternoon Mabel Watson Payne settled down on the sofa next to her grandmother and took up a quiet version of "go-through-the-handbag." We had already been playing hard for a couple of hours, and it was gratifying to see her slowing herself down when she needed to but without getting cranky (as more baby-like babies tend to do toward the end of the afternoon).
